I’ve suspected for a long time that the movement around EY might be a sophisticated scam to live off donations of nonconformists...
Before someone brings it up. I further said, “but that’s just another crazy conspiracy theory”. I wouldn’t say something like this and actually mean it without being reasonable confident. And I’m not, I’m just being a troll sometimes. Although other people will inevitably come to this conclusion. You just have to read this post, see the massive amount of writings about rationality and the little cherry on the cake that is AI going FOOM. Other people have called a positive Singularity the rapture of the nerds, for obvious reasons.
So yes, I said this, and you people failed an adequate response. Of course you don’t think you did, I haven’t read your precious sequences after all, but don’t expect others will if you cannot provide a summary without telling people to read hundreds of blog posts of which most are likely not even related to the actual criticism. Lucky I’m on your side, someone who’s just being a troll. But if you try to crush people like PZ Myers the same way, i.e. “we are the LW community, far above your rationality standards and that of your friends”, you won’t win. Yeah, maybe you’ll succeed without those people, without the academics and the mainstream. But I wouldn’t bet on it, I’d try to improve my attitude towards the trolls and lesser rationalists out there. Learn a lesson from Kurzweil on being polite, intelligible and concise in the face of arrogant bosh that are the outpourings of PZ Myers and the like.
And if you really think you’ll win alone, well then, don’t expect the critizim and mockery to be decreasing. The people who’ll look at you and say, ah yes a whole bunch of crummy anecdotes, academic grandstanding & incredibly boring logic arguments to wade through. And that’s supposed to be the single bright shining hope for the redemption of the humanities collective intellect? They first need to figure out how to distill their subject matter and make it more palatable for the average person who really doesn’t care about being part of the Bayesian in-crowd.

Please don’t generalise. I certainly can’t be accused of thinking we succeed in supplying an adequate response. It’s not you against lesswrong. It is you against “Oh $#!%, oh $#!%, we’re all going to die! What can we do to survive and thrive?”
