Some have hypothesized that promoting crazy beliefs helps a ruling coalition keep hold of power because the coalition’s repressive efforts can be concentrated on the fraction of the population that shows signs of not believing the crazy beliefs. In other words, they can stay in power by cracking down on those who won’t get with the program.
