I could switch my RSS feed to only include promoted posts, but that would increase the problem of the hiddenness of non-promoted Main posts. Is there something else that I could do, or does this need to be fixed on Less Wrong’s end?
People interested in meetups would check the meetup thread or get notified when it is updated. Really important mega-meetups or inaugural meetups can still be posted in the usual place.
Meetup posts have started appearing on the RSS feed for lesswrong Main (http://lesswrong.com/new/.rss).

Meetups should have its own thread, like the Open thread, not be posted in Discussion. Of course, we do not live in a should universe...
This would lower the visibility of individual meetups, which in turn could lower attendance or the number of newcomers for meetups.
