From your other comments it seems clear that expressing and projecting attachment to this person has positive utility for you, even if it would change little in your relationship. Is this his (I presume) view, as well? Do either/any of you see any obvious negatives in being engaged and eventually married? If not, why wait?
“Why wait?” is a perfectly reasonable question, but simply answering it “let’s not!” probably doesn’t yield the best expected value. (It might work perfectly fine. It’d probably work perfectly fine. But it seems likely to be slightly less conducive to everything being perfectly fine than some better-calibrated choice of timing.)
