Personally, I don’t think these explanations tell the whole story. If people needed self-actualization, why choose anti-technology crusades? Why not self-actualize through invention, or art? [...] However, the goals I most often hear are all the negation of negatives: cure cancer, eliminate poverty, stop climate change.
When looking at the question, I had the hypnothesis “Maybe, it became more worthwhile on focusing that the poor get more resources then on focusing that the rich get more”.
I looked at the US Gini numbers and interestingly from 1927 to the start of the Great Stagnation in the 1970s, Gini fell in the US and with the Great Stagnation it started rising.
