I spent 3 hours tops per set of ~20 exercises (allowing myself the hint schedule I detailed), but my overall time was somewhat lower than the 84 hours that implies. On average, my pace was one section + exercises / day.
The hint schedule meant that at first, I was pretty bad and needed help liberally, but that went away quickly. Some exercises took me half an hour or more, but for most I had a proof outline within a minute.
I also was familiar with the content of the first three chapters from my linear algebra course in college.
