I will therefore make a slightly more specific version which I suspect doesn’t sound as unreasonable “When navigating in certain contexts, especially in cars and on ships, the existence of sophisticated GPS devices which can give detailed instructions removes much of the need for navigational ability. As a result, people are losing their sense of direction.”
The distinction between maps and other tech like GPS isn’t even important. So a more general rephrasing is that any tech that is worthwhile could make some old ability somewhat obsolete. This is true of GPS replacing maps and maps replacing innate direction-finding.
