Keep in mind that the mode isn’t YOUR mode, it’s the environment and mode of people around you, so it’s crucial to have mechanisms for recognizing which mode others are in. Being in peace mode when you’re surrounded by enemies is deadly, and being in war mode among friends is toxic.
And ideally to have mechanisms and tools to switch people to peace mode. Showing them the win-win, removing the instigators, getting them enough food, eliciting sympathy for similarity of situation, etc. Or just leaving.
And, of course, if this fails, you want the ability to kill them, and put them in Rest in Peace mode. Power is instrumentally useful for almost any goal.
