I think the reason why this seems like a plausibly good idea instead of an obviously terrible one is that we conflate thinking with acting. You can’t learn to think for yourself properly without repeatedly trying, which will necessarily involve thinking for yourself improperly. But, in the meantime, you should expect to be wrong about lots of things and should probably conform to the customs of some people with a track record of not totally failing.
