...if the regulatory option seems sensible, I am willing to redirect my career to focus on it and to try to draft others with the right skills to do so as well.
If, however, you assure me that there are already brilliant lobbyists working day and night to do this, and it turns out that it’s harder than I thought, I will desist. Moreover, if there is something I’ve overlooked and this is a bad idea, I will desist.
But if it’s worth a try, I’ll try.
I’m not sure about the regulatory approach you’re putting forth here, but if you redirected your career to AI governance & strategy or committed substantial time to working on it as you say here, that could be a big contribution. My understanding is that people are desperately needed.
I just heard a talk today with Luke Muehlhauser. He’s on the AI governance & policy side of Open Phil. During the talk he said it’s a common perception that there are dozens of people working full-time on the important questions in this area, but there really aren’t.
Rethink Priorities is hiring for two AI governance & strategy research roles now. You might try FLI too. I bet others in the space are hiring as well or have things they’re happy to have help with if contacted.

These are both supremely helpful replies. Thank you.
