The problem with this idea (which I fully support) is the any current elected official is likely to have benefited from the existing system. Changing the voting system might not disadvantage a particular political party (though it definitely can) it will disadvantage it’s current elected officials.
Just because someone benefited in the past from the existing system and came into power based on the system doesn’t automatically mean that it’s still in their interest.
In the present system, a politician that’s popular with the general population in his district can still lose his seat in a primary challenge. Changing to approval voting means that current elected officials have to fear extremists from their own parties running primary challenges against them less.
Basically any voting system but plurality voting for mutually exclusive choices.
