Once I’ve directed my attention to the mental pain, I try to source the discomfort. Using some backtracking and checking multiple threads (e.g. “is it because I feel scared?”) allows me to figure out why. This whole process takes maybe half a minute.
I’m not sure why you use the phrase “mental pain” here. In some sense all pain is mental, you could also argue that none is.

I’m trying to refer to a very specific type of mental pain, where it feels like I must flinch away from something that is true because I don’t want to look into it, or because I know it will hurt or reveal a flaw in me. It feels similar to the mental state of procrastination, where you keep putting something off even though you know that will only further screw you over.
