I’ll have to hear a pretty compelling argument to believe that caring about the crazy shenanigans they get up to is a trivial distraction. Or did you mean something else by “the role of government”?

Even if the actions of the government have a significant impact it could still be considered a ‘trivial distraction’ to discuss the actions of the government if one’s ability to influence them is negligible. They are, after all, very, very, very big agents.
In those circumstances it may be useful to discuss how to most effectively live in the world given what the government is doing but next to useless to discuss the politics of what the government ‘should’ do.
