Speaking as an Old, and one who’s not personally deeply involved in AI Risk mitigation/research, I’m not sure how much of this is generational, vs just disagreement on risk levels and ability of specific individuals to influence.
The “if someone tells you to give up, maybe don’t” advice is fully general. If MOST people tell you, then that’s evidence to update on, but if it doesn’t move you enough, it’s your life and you make the call. Likewise the “feel betrayed by the world ignoring your concerns”. That’s a near-universal feeling, though the topic shifts among individuals and sub-groups. And should likewise not dissuade you beyond making you ask the question whether they’re right.
