Someone told me in grade school: “Never use ‘this’ as a noun, only an adjective”. I think it’s a good rule and I believe that I’ve followed it ever since then.
(I think that your complaint about ‘this’ pretty much exclusively applies to this-as-a-noun, not this-as-an-adjective, although you’re welcome to disagree.)

Yeah, that’s a good pithy summary! I often suggest replacing “this” with “this [x]”.
