It’s conflict that worth to be had and it’s good to be open about the lines of that conflict in a public forum.
That’s not my crux. The conflict on the Kensho and Circling threads made me substantially more worried about posting similar threads. I don’t enjoy the thought of being punished for trying to introduce new ideas to LW by having to spend my time dealing with demon threads. This is the sort of thing that made me stop writing on LW 1.0, and it’s also an invisible cost; you won’t notice it’s happening unless you talk to people who aren’t posting about why they aren’t posting.
When being afraid of being punished, comments wouldn’t be my main fear. I prefer a charged open discussion above other ways of social punishment where people change their opinion about myself without the conflict being out in the open.
I don’t think think Qiaochu would like the effect of posting Overton Window violating things on this website, not getting negative feedback here but actually suffering socially as a result.
It would be very nice if it would be possible to violate the Overton Window without having to think about it, but it isn’t as easy.

That doesn’t address the fact that Qiaochu has a different instinctive reaction.
The goal of this proposal is to deal with the fact that different people are different.
I completely understand the instinct.
