Since the idea is existential risk, why not just use Tacgnol? It works especially well, since tacgnol also represents scope insensitivity. (Gnoool si Tacgnol.)
The problem is to a large extent to get people to not dismiss existential risk as scifi. In that regard, this is almost the exact opposite of what would make a good cover.

What about the plot of severity vs scope? OK maybe it’s not quite a “picture” but surely the “emotion-evoking” box is ticked.
A bad sci-fi paperback cover? Preferably with alien bugs ravishing a cute semi-naked human girl.
