I’ve been talking to a lot of recruiters as I interview for web developer positions. The recruiters don’t code, but they are very familiar with all the technologies and buzz words. That made me think of this article. They use the words and often do so in a sensible way, but they don’t have a clue as to why their sentences make sense.
Example: “Yes, we use Angular on the front end because it provides the tools to solve the problems we have.” That’s a sensible answer, but the recruiter doesn’t know:
What “the front end” is.
What the problems they’re having are.
What the tools that Angular provides are.
I’m not sure what level of understanding the recruiters have. I think it’s Level 1. They can often actually answer the questions… but don’t really know what they’re saying. When given an input (question), they can (sometimes) respond with the right output (answer), but they don’t know what the words they speak actually mean. I wouldn’t say that they have a Level 0 understanding. If that were the case, then they wouldn’t actually be able to answer questions about technologies.
I’m noticing a bit of confusion in myself though, and I don’t think I fully understand the difference between Level 0 and Level 1.
