I don’t know per se what the ventral tegmental area does, but I know it’s a part of the brain and, well, I’m relying on the post/article to tell me what it does if that is relevant to the point.

Right. You don’t need to know what the VTA does or even where it is to get the point that we have these functions mapped to very clusters of neurons.
