Your donation could stop you from other worthwhile activities—a compensation mechanism like I said. IMO when willpower is scarce it’s best to spend it on your own life, and only start giving when you have plenty to spare. But many people give to others only to give meaning to their empty lives.
If you donate money to a cause then obviously it’s an important part of your life and you believe that the donation makes it brighter and happier.
