This was one of the first time I saw someone take a theory of macro-history and actually try to figure out if it’s true, and I found it somewhat shocking to read at the time. I like all of the kinds of analysis Scott brought to bear on this, like asking how many free variables there were for Turchin to select from, or taking other datasets and seeing if they matched.
