Complexity of value doesn’t necessarily imply that people have more than one kind of utilon, it just says that people can value 1 unit of food + 1 unit of sex higher than 2 units of either. In other words, it says the second derivative terms are significant :-)

Until I saw your comment, the third-from-last paragraph (combined with the impression of credibility created by the rest of the post) was making me very sad because of what it implies about the effectiveness of decision theory and the usefulness of formal goal systems. My probability of the success of the FAI project dropped sharply in a few minutes, then recovered when I read your comment.
