First Date Deductions

Meet inside The Shops at Waterloo Town Square—we will congregate in the indoor seating area next to the Your Independent Grocer with the trees sticking out in the middle of the benches (pic) at 7:00 pm for 15 minutes, and then head over to my nearby apartment’s amenity room. If you’ve been around a few times, feel free to meet up at the front door of the apartment at 7:30 instead.

Preparation

For this meetup, come dressed in your best, favorite outfit—as if for a promising first date you’re excited about, or interviewing for your dream job at a cool design company, or if you’re going to go to a party where you know you’ll run into an ex and you really really want them to know how much you’re thriving without them.

Also, as always, do your readings.

Activity

This week, we’ll do a fun experimental workshop on direct observation and abduction (which is like deduction, but fancier. Ask @Cole Wyeth for details).

We’ll start with a quick exercise to get our eyes warmed up, and then we’ll move into detective mode and observe the way that the other attendees are dressed, what they’re trying to say, and if they’re succeeding.

Caveat Emptor: This is a meetup where you’ll be Very Observed, and people might make assumptions about you that you might not like. Come at your own risk :)

Readings

How To Observe Abstract Objects—Logan Strohl, 2022 (but only to the end of Phase 1)

Original Seeing—Eliezer Yudkowsky, 2007

For bonus points, as supplemental readings there is Getting Your Eyes On (particularly the beginning section about morels), and the sequences Seeing With Fresh Eyes, Intro to Naturalism, and The Nuts and Bolts of Naturalism.
