Kansas City Secular Solstice

Winter was once a far harsher force, leaving our ancestors at its mercy and often taking loved ones with it. Today, we’ve overcome that challenge—staving off the cold and lighting the darkness. In this way, winter both literally represents one of the greatest challenges we’ve overcome, as well as metaphorically represents the challenges we still face. Much has changed for the better, but one thing remains: light and warmth are still needed to beat back the darkness.

Come join Kansas City Rationality & Effective Altruism and Kansas City Oasis for an evening of food, live music, and prose as we meditate on the darkness of the world, and celebrate the arc of progress, science, and the indomitable human spirit.

- Childcare will be provided on-site! While well-behaved children are welcome to participate, bear in mind that this event will have solemn moments and periodically touch on heavy themes.

- Everyone is encouraged to bring some kind of light source, the more sentimental the better, as long as it is easy to ignite and extinguish. This can be anything from a candle to a toy lightsaber! Be prepared to share why it’s sentimental to you, if applicable.

-Bringing food and drink, potluck-style, is also encouraged! (Please mark whether it is vegan/gluten free). We will begin the evening with a period of food and fellowship, then convene for the music and prose.
