To get back to the topic, I want to communicate with people around me with more authenticity and not with more filters. Putting down filters is hard but it’s more what I want to live.

For me the idea that I might hurt people with honest communication is quite recent. I mean I understand that people are different. Some consequences of my behavioral patterns were just not clear for me. And I didn’t get helpful feedback about that—at least non that I was able to parse blind as I was. I think a cheritable reading would have been that Elo pointed out the beginning of the ideas—not their end. For that your commentary seems much more suitable.

I not only object to the detail of the advice, I also object to the strategy that he used to derive the advice which is looking at what average people do and where it has benefits. For nerds that means having the tact filter to surpress their emotions. For non-nerds in this case that means communicating superficially and not saying anything that might offend and thus have boring small talk (I focused the above situation more on the suggestion for the other filter).
In general strategy I even think I was similar to Elo when I was his age (five years ago). I was reading a lot on the internet. I was into community building and was moderating the personal effectiveness section of a bigger forum. I had broad personal development knowledge but I didn’t go deep. I could have seen myself to write something similar without thinking about the costs of the filters.

For me the filter is a more differentiated ‘device’ that e.g. (case outgoing) tones down the intensity or adds compassion or otherwise tries to adapt the message to the receiver—mostly to reduce the emotional impact. Or the incoming case may e.g. interpret messages as exactly lacking these things or information about the sender instead of about the receiver.
